The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner, Part 3

This is part three of the summary of health recommendations from The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner.

Lesson three involves eating a whole foods, plant based diet (does this sound familiar?) The centenarians typically eat two veggies per meal and consume meat in limited quantities. His recommendation is to have meat no more than twice per week and a serving size no larger than the size of a deck of cards. He recommends making beans the cornerstone of your diet and having a handful of nuts every day.

Lesson four involves drinking a glass of red wine (I’ll say occasionally). This lesson is taken from the centenarians of Sardinia. However, please do not start drinking red wine for health purposes if not already enjoying this beverage.

Finding your life’s purpose is one part of lesson five. What is your mission statement? Write it down. He also recommends stretching your mind by learning something new (a language or musical instrument.)

Lesson number six is about slowing down. He recommends reducing your time in front of a television and making it a habit to show up 15 minutes early anywhere that you may be going. Finally, incorporate quiet time (meditation) into your life every day.

I’ll conclude my summary in the next “Read” blog.
